Escape to Jomsom Trekking

Escape to Jomsom Trekking

Nestled in the river valley of the Kaligandaki, Jomsom village receives the blessings of the glorious mountains of the Himalayan range from all four directions. The view from the lodge encompasses the best views of the magnificent Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the vast river valley below where the winds dance and the river twirls. It is where sounds from the bells of passing herds of cattle and the gush of the winds transform into music; and the physical reality of the landscape, a transcendental art. Life amidst the presence of the four gods of the region is as rich and real as it can be and it is here we have created a home for you to be a part of life in the Jomsom village

Escape to Jomsom Trekking day to day itinerary

Day 01: Jomsom (2713m) to Marpha Day Hike - 4/5 hours A scenic mountain flight over the high mountains takes you to Jomsom, headquarter of the district with many government offices, shops and army barrack. Jomsom is the gateway to Mustang.

Guests will be received at the Jomsom Airport and breakfast will be served. Leaving Jomsom around 9 AM either on a horseback or on foot accompanied by a porter-guide, guests will travel through the villages of Marpha. Marpha is another popular stop after Jomsom. The main street of Marpha is a paved thoroughfare lined with lodges, restaurants, book shops, bakeries, and all the other facilities a trekker needs. In the centre of the village, you will find the rapidly expanding Solmi Gompa. This flourishing gompa’s real treasure and 100 year old giant prayer-wheel brought from Tibet. You can do meditation at the back of the temple. If you want some real peace then higher still you will find a large stupa, used as a monks retreat, which dominates the entire village.

On the southern outskirts of the village you will find the Marpha Horticultural Research Station. This was set up in 1966 to introduce new crops into the region. It was here that the apple, which has become so important to local economy. It is open to the public daily from 9am to 4pm. See the attached distillery and pop along for an educational tasting. Marpha is clean and pleasant village, it is not dirty village like other. These twin villages are where the Thakali people first settled when they came down from the Tibetan plateau and they are now considered sacred places by their descendents the Tamangs.

Lunch will be arranged at Marpah. Overnight at Marpha or Return to Jomsom.

Day 02: Jomsom to Kagbeni Day Hike - 5/6 hours Situated at an altitude of 2800m, Kagbeni is a famous village of Baarah Gaun region in Mustang district that lies in popular Annapurna Circuit Trek route and gateway to upper Mustang. It is a fascinating medieval village with closely packed mud brick houses, dark alleys, and imposing chhortens. The village stands in a little green oasis dominated by its red monastery. The ‘Kag’ of Kagbeni used to be a “Ghag” meaning centre. Hence, it is a centre of nearby villages of Jomsom to south and Muktinath to east. “Beni” in Nepali means confluence of Kali Gandaki and indeed Kagbeni lies near the confluence of Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers. Before heading to Muktinath, Hindus pilgrims offer Pinda and perform Shraddha(Hindu ritual) to their ancestors at this confluence believing that it brings salvation to ancestors. According to Hindu epic Adhyatma Ramayan, Kagbhusundi meditated here on suggestion of Saptarishis, hence place was named Kagbeni. The village maintains characteristic appearance of a fortress town and is culturally very rich. The town played a very significant role during “salt Trade” era between Tibet and Nepal. However, with formation of Mustang Kimgdom in 15th century, Kagbeni’s importance diminished. The main ethnic group in village is Bhotias(posses last name Gurung and Thakuri) of Tibetan orgin.

Day 03: Breakfast at the hotel, transfer to airport, fly to Pokhara
